Yooper Spectator Under Attack!
Open letter to Joseph Hernandez
Amendment I, U.S. Constitution
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free
exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people
peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Dear Joseph,
I've taken the liberty of publishing your e-mailed message to Dr. Anton Pintar, Professor
Emeritus of the Department of Chemical Engineering at MTU.  Since you don't know me
personally or any of those who write for my paper, I can only presume you find the paper's
conservative content threatening to your personal agenda, whatever that may be.
That you, a Ph.D. candidate at Tech, where some professors are my friends, would compile a
"table" of Yooper Spectator advertisers and businesses that make the paper available to their
customers, and then offer it to Dr. Pintar with the proposition that he become involved in a
collective effort to economically force those advertisers and businesses to not support my
publication suggests that your "beef" is political in nature.
Dr. Pintar, through his election as Houghton County Commissioner for District 3, is a public
figure.  He's known to be very much involved with the Houghton County Democrat Party and,
as such, will most likely be embarrassed by the negative publicity your e-mailed message
will now receive, whether he solicited your efforts or not.
Dr. Pintar, known to me as Tony, is my wife's cousin and it's pretty certain that he realizes both
she and I, as well as other members of our family, would be very disappointed if he were to
have anything to do with the political game playing you've suggested.
However, while your e-mail message sheds derision not just on Dr. Pintar, as a county
leader, but also on the political party he represents, I really have no other choice but to
address it publicly since it's now circulating throughout the community via the Internet, leaving
a trail that's impossible for me to follow and rebut.
The district that Dr. Pintar represents includes the City of Hancock and Adams and Quincy
Townships, an area that includes many businesses that advertise in my paper. Surely, you're
not suggesting that he use his position in the community to engage in Gestapo tactics or
interfere with my constitutional right to freedom of the press, are you?
Oh, my, he emailed your email already to a suppressed list! Hmmmmmm.
Clearly, the implied threat in your poorly written message to Tony is to shut my paper down; to
put me out of a business that I, a disabled senior citizen, thoroughly enjoy.
In America, however, we still enjoy the constitutional right to freedom of the press, a right
given to us centuries ago by some very wise men who understood the intricacies of tyranny,
suppression, and communist tactics, long before there was such a thing as a Communist
Party.
At this point in time, I'm not sure how this issue between us will be resolved, but let me
assure you that we at the Spectator must be doing something right since we're now hard put
to keep up with the demand for our paper by readers, not just in the local area, but as far away
as Ironwood, Escanaba, downstate Michigan,  in other states, and to Finland and Iraq and
who knows where else? We are also available on the Internet.
My advertisers know and respect the fact that the Yooper Spectator is geared toward
upholding the conservative values of the great majority of Americans rather than knuckling
under to threats such as you've now posed.
Perhaps by doing business with them instead of shunning them, Joseph, you could learn a
valuable lesson about free enterprise.
Before you were born there was one Dr. Raymond Smith and one John MacInnes. One was
MTU president and one hockey coach. Both beloved men of high class who I know would be
ashamed of an email like you have written.
I hope your MTU professors feel the same way.

HANCOCK: Yooper Spectator readers and friends, as seen above there is a very real threat to
my ability to continue publishing.
If you enjoy receiving a free paper every month, I'd like to ask you to support our effort by
sending any amount of money so we can continue publishing.
It is impossible for me to know how many people are being solicited to help this effort. How
did I get this email? A person who received it called an advertiser and sent it to him. When
asked how he got it, he said because he had given money before to the Democratic party.
The advertiser who received it and emailed a copy to me. As seen by the date of the email, it
was sent on Nov. 20, 2007.
It's wording suggests an attempt to use perceived economic muscle to break my paper. It's
not a threat I can leisurely deal with.
As I have written I lost my job when my employer was sold three Decembers back. I decided
to publish a free paper about the area, outdoor material and pictures and items of interest to
Yoopers.
We began with 5,000 papers printed at the Daily Mining Gazette in Houghton.
Subsequently, volunteer senior citizens began offering help, writing and delivering.
I have no paid staff. I sell ads, write stories and edit and design the paper on my PC.
Hunting friends began telling me of wolf problems. I don't hunt and I knew nothing about
wolves. So I set about learning. We began printing many stories on wolves.
My writers became worried on items regarding loss of property rights, so we published
stories on that.
I'm a conservative guy by nature and it's been reflected in my publication. I have NEVER been
a member of any political party. I give no money to any political party or attend any political
functions.
My readers include people from about every political party. Liberals have told me they read my
paper, even if some items appear too conservative for them. I often hear "At least you say
what you believe!"
Yes, I do. Why be anything but yourself? If I'm not true to myself, how can anyone trust me?
When I wrote for the Daily Mining Gazette, when I sold cars, when I sold radio or print
advertising or whatever, I wanted to go to bed without a bothered conscience.
And when we print my only rule is it better be fact, not fiction, if it's a serious article.
I've been in this community for over 35 years. I live by my reputation.
I enjoy selling ads to people my kid's age. I enjoy publishing a paper for Yoopers. I hear
virtually every day some type of compliment on the paper. I can't tell you how humbling this is,
because it means I'm doing something meaningful.
I've written that I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis after I started this paper. I've written
how difficult this was to accept, how I went into denial.
After I accepted my lot, I started a support group which meets monthly at Keweenaw Home
Nursing. There's a bond of all with MS. The organization supplies support material and is
involved in public education.
I write about my own struggles to do rehabilitation so I can keep walking. I desperately wish to
remain active and do meaningful work. I think what I do is meaningful--meaning this paper.
The volunteers OFFERED HELP! I did not beg anyone to do anything! There were days when
my legs ached and I could barely walk to get out papers to businesses. Then some dear
people offered help.
I have too much pride, I admit it. But these grandparent age people write and help me deliver.
I appreciate their help very much!
I've borrowed money to keep this paper afloat. It is highly difficult to make any profit with ANY
new business!
Yes, I applied for disability. They flatly denied any assistance. Then they told me of a program
which MIGHT give me $80 or so a month, but I'd have to fill out forms and report. I told them to
keep it!
Now this young Hernandez makes plans with Anton Pintar to cut off my business! Out of the
blue! No phone calls, no letter, nothing!
Is this part of the Democratic party's agenda for a fairness doctrine? You mean with my sweat
and work and money I have to print what they want?
They tried this with Rush Limbaugh. His letter from the Dems brought $2.1 million on ebay,
and he matched it and gave it for military health care!
I like this. We write many articles showing support for our troops.
Maybe I do this because the service doesn't want old grandpas with MS in their war!
A bad month would end the paper, which is what Mr. Hernandez wishes to do. While he gets
a mechanical engineering Ph.D. at a state supported institution!
Mr. Hernandez, you or anyone else can believe whatever they want. Why can't you just leave
me alone?
Does Michigan Tech teach you in mechanical engineering to operate like you are doing? I do
not think so. Is Madhu Vable a professor of yours?
Learn to be like him!

Hey Anton,

I have compiled a table with all of the companies that advertise
in the yooper spectator, including the address and phone number.
also have a table with places that distribute the material. I think we
need to send this out on the this and have people call the
companies that both distribute and advertise and them know
that we will not be shopping at their stores.
